Quality Matters

Your Skills Gap and Your Technology Gap Are Compounding. Do Not Wait

AI is moving into quality systems faster than most teams are building the skills to govern it.

At a mini Reinvention Lab at KENX GMP University & MedTech Innovation in Philadelphia on October 7, every participant tested as a Translator. That result is atypical, and it says something about how quality professionals are formed. We are trained to bridge, document, and sign. We are rarely trained to disrupt. The moment now requires both.

Debt does not wait for you

In our Validation Debt Game, participants played a company at level 2 digital validation maturity, which is still where much of the industry sits, whatever the stage presentations suggest. They negotiated a pilot for a GPT-based validation assistant, and the same obstacles surfaced that I see inside client organizations:

  • Business and IT working in silos
  • Data and migration decisions made without quality at the table
  • A risk-based approach that corporate policy does not yet support

Every person in that room was capable. The structure around them kept good decisions from being made consciously, defensibly, and continuously.

That structure is debt. Every system you add before your people can govern it adds to the balance. Every year of waiting widens the gap between the technology you own and the skills you have to run it. Paying it down later costs more, and the balance stays hidden until an inspector or an incident exposes it.

The way out starts with how you decide

A signed and dated record shows points in time. It does not show how the judgment was made between them. As AI takes on more of the work, that gap becomes a defensibility problem. Quality has to sit at the design table from the first day, with the authority to shape a decision before anyone signs it.

That capability is built through practice: in a room, with your own biases and constraints, before the decision that counts arrives.

Bring Reinvention Lab to your team

Reinvention Lab gives cross-functional teams room to rethink operational work they have stopped questioning, through a quality lens. A half-day mini lab starts the conversation. The full program is for teams ready to change how they decide. In either format, quality, IT, validation, procurement, and finance work the problem in the same room.

Start with one team and one pilot, before the mismatch becomes unmanageable.

The longer argument is in the book

Reinvention is a skill, and it starts with courage. That is the premise of my book, The Courage to Reinvent, coming Fall 2026. It makes the case for how individuals, teams, and the industry change how they decide, and why waiting for permission carries the greater risk.

What decision is your team still waiting for permission to make?
